Some journeys move you from place to place and journeys that move you in ways you cannot quite name. The train ride through Sri Lanka’s hill country is firmly in the second category, a slow, winding ascent through a landscape so beautiful that seasoned travellers have been known to fall silent and simply stare. In this post, we take you on board the famous Kandy to Ella railway and share everything you need to know to experience it at its most magical.
The journey begins at Kandy station, where the old blue-and-yellow carriages creak into motion and the city gives way almost immediately to rolling green countryside. Within the first hour, the track is climbing – past terraced paddy fields, small station towns wreathed in mist and the first glimpses of the tea country that will define the next four hours of travel. The air cools noticeably as altitude is gained, and by the time the train passes through the long tunnels above Nanu Oya, you have left the tropical lowlands entirely and entered a landscape that feels closer to the Scottish Highlands than to South Asia.
The most celebrated section of the journey runs between Nanu Oya and Ella, where the tracks traverse the southern edge of the hill country along ridgelines and through forest-filled valleys with almost continuous drama. Look out for the Demodara Loop, a remarkable feat of engineering in which the track loops back beneath itself through a mountain tunnel and the Nine Arch Bridge, visible from the carriage windows and even more spectacular from the hillside paths above Ella town. The entire journey from Kandy to Ella takes approximately six to seven hours and covers 175 kilometres of unforgettable terrain.
We recommend booking an Observation Saloon or First-Class seat for the best experience, arriving early at Kandy station to secure a window position and choosing a morning departure that places you in the Ella section during the golden afternoon light. Bring a light layer for the cool highland air, a good camera and the willingness to spend a few hours doing absolutely nothing except watching one of the most beautiful landscapes on Earth unfold outside your window. Some journeys are about the destination. This one is entirely about the ride.
